Monsey, NY - Authorities Responded to Calls of Kaparos (Chickens) Being Mistreated
Monsey, NY - Reports that numerous chickens were being mistreated or killed at a park-and-ride lot in Monsey today proved to be inaccurate.
When authorities got to the county lot on Route 59, they found about 4,000 chickens under a large tent, apparently gathered there by the Orthodox Jewish community for a particular holiday ritual, said Ramapo Police Department Capt. James Quinn.
Also did the Monsey Fire Department respond to ensure the chickens had adequate water, and the county Health Department responded to ensure the birds were being properly cared for, Quinn said. He said police were initially called by concerned witnesses who saw some of the birds get loose.
The kaparos ritual, which is traditionally performed during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, involves waving a chicken over one's head while saying a prayer. The chicken is then sent to slaughter and given to the poor.
