Silencing MEMORY: A Photo Essay documenting the legacy of trauma and suffering caused by Saddam Hussein.

Click the picture or Here to go to the Photo Essay

Saddam is gone.
A lot will rejoice at the despots demise.
But the Legacy of his existance shall scar Iraq for generations to come.
I came across this photo essay by Sheryl A. Mendez.

It was uploaded to WarShooter two full months before his demise.

The photo essay is a moving tribute to those that have suffered at the hands of Saddam.

The horror is expressed to me, possibly because I am a father, most simply in the bravery of this mans last words to his wife and children.

Click Here or the picture to enlarge the image

My dearest wife and lovely children,
Because of my country, I will be executed. I ask you not to
Wear black clothes and don't disavow the children's wishes.

Let them work and work hard. Don't stop them from watching

TV, listening to radio or records. Don't think about my fate.

They must worry about their future and I ask them to continue

Their education successfully.

Don't let the Enemy put his hands on the furniture of the house
And distribute it. And about that land which I own, I advise

You not to think about it until the situation changes for the
Better. At that time, do what you think is right.

I put my shop some things with my son Sherwan [weapons]

And you should know about them. I kiss your brother Abdula's
Eyes and mu brothers and sisters and relatives. I kissed the eyes of

Sherwan. I'm sorry I didn't live long enough to hug him at least
one more time. I am proud of my place. I am proud because

my son will be the son of a martyr and ask you not to make friends
until you trust them at least. I ask for G_d in every corner of my

cell [2metres x 2metres]. My brother Jabar and I, Atta-al-Haq
Mr. Ahmed, and Mohammad Rachim are waiting for our lives
to end.

Suspected Australian extremist held in Iraq

I don't know whats going on in Australia right now but there seems to be a rather large increase in potential 'Home grown' terrorism or at least 'home based'.

  • Missile launchers being sold for $2.
  • An Australian being caught in Iraq suspected of active Jihadism. [Below]
  • Australian Muslims in Yemen suspected of smuggling weapons to Somalia. The brothers Abdullah and Mohammed Ayub had been arrested on October 17 with other foreign nationals. The two Australian brothers have close family ties with Abdul Rahman Ayub, an Indonesian, who is strongly suspected to be a member of terror group Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia.
  • A Breaking story of a serious terrorist threat regarding the actual targets of those Rocket launchers sold to suspected terrorists.
  • For an update on the Australian suspected of waging Jihad against Western Forces in Iraq check out this article from The Australian.

AN Australian citizen has been arrested by coalition forces in Iraq on suspicion of conspiring to commit terrorist acts.

Warya Kanie, 39, an Iraqi Kurd, came to Australia about three years ago with his young daughter as part of the humanitarian refugee program to join his three brothers, who were already living in Adelaide.

Mr Kanie, who had divorced his wife, was living in a housing trust apartment on unemployment benefits and receiving additional benefits as a single father.

A member of the Australian Iraqi community, who spoke to The Weekend Australian on condition of anonymity, said Mr Kanie was a Sunni and "had extremist views".

Mr Kanie left Adelaide about seven months ago, after gaining Australian citizenship, telling his family that he was going to look for a new wife in Iraq.

But he allegedly told a friend that he was leaving Australian "to go on jihad".

Mr Kanie is alleged to have been staunchly opposed to the occupation of Iraq and supported terrorist acts against Western forces and Iraqis co-operating with them.

Sharif Ali bin Hussein, imam of the Marion Road mosque in Adelaide's southern suburbs where Mr Kanie is thought to have worshipped, denied through an interpreter knowing him.

Mr Kanie travelled to Jordan with his daughter, whom he left with his sister before going on to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

Coalition forces detained Mr Kanie for allegedly engaging in anti-coalition activities in Baghdad in mid-October. He has since been held as a security internee.

A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs said consular officials met Mr Kanie on November 10 and spoke to him by phone on December 15.

UN Security Council Resolution 1637, under which Mr Kanie is being held, extended the mandate of the multinational force in Iraq until the end of last year.

"He is well," the spokesperson said. "Officials in Canberra are in touch with his next of kin."

Mr Kanie's family expressed concern in Adelaide yesterday at the lack of information on why he was being held. "Why he is in the prison, I have absolutely no idea," his brother Danna said.

Danna Kanie told The Weekend Australian a meeting with ASIO officials a few weeks ago had shed little light on the circumstances of his arrest.

"They've got no information at all," he said. "They're just waiting for information from Iraq. I don't know if they have moved Warya and didn't tell me."

Danna Kanie said he had not seen his brother in the past two years. "We've got problems," Danna said. "I didn't like to see him anymore."

Another brother, Zaniar, said that Warya Kanie had gone to Baghdad looking for a wife, "as is our culture". "Until now, they say there is no proof, no evidence (against him)" he said.

An Australian Iraqi told The Weekend Australian that the rift between Mr Kanie and his brothers might have developed because he was the only fundamentalist in the family.

Labor Leader Kevin Rudd today said the Federal Government should be giving Mr Kanie as much support as possible.

"Every Australian abroad who finds himself in trouble deserves legitimate consular support from the Australian Government,'' Mr Rudd said
"That's partly why we pay our taxes, to make sure that when you're overseas at any given time you run into trouble with the law or other sorts of trouble, that there are appropriate levels of Australian Government support abroad.''

Rockets to be fired in terror plot: Target Nuclear reactor and Office Tower

    Australian Terrorism
I don't know whats going on in Australia right now but there seems to be a rather large increase in potential 'Home grown' terrorism or at least 'home based'.

  • In a Series of Autralian Terrorism reports:
Another report of a developing trend in Australia. There has been some remarkable activity lately in Australia and by some Australian citizens with regards to Terrorism and Jihad fighters.

This report from The Australian details what could have been a calamitous terror strike
    _____________

THE nation's only nuclear reactor and the Australian headquarters of American Express were likely to be targeted by terrorist clients of an accused arms dealer arrested in Sydney yesterday over the theft of five shoulder-fired rocket launchers.

The plot, which NSW police described as "blurring the lines" between criminality and terrorism, dramatically widens what is known about the alleged plan in 2005 to attack targets in Sydney.

Taha Abdulrahman, 28, of the western Sydney suburb of Leumeah, was yesterday charged with 17 offences related to the five rocket launchers, allegedly among seven stolen from the Australian Defence Force.

He was remanded in custody after a brief court hearing. He is accused of knowing several of the 23 men arrested in Sydney and Melbourne in late 2005 in the nation's biggest counter-terrorism operation. The men are accused of being members of a terrorist organisation.

"The person who received five (weapons) is facing terrorism charges on another matter," Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Frank Prendergast said.

Mr Prendergast said another man who received stolen weapons was also facing criminal charges, which were not related to terrorism.

AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said police would allege one of the 66mm portable rockets was destined to be fired at a Sydney building.

    Right: The American Express Tower

The Weekend Australian understands that building to be the 28-storey American Express headquarters on Liverpool Street in the central business district.

NSW counter-terrorism chief Nick Kaldas told Macquarie Radio yesterday that another target being considered was Sydney's Lucas Heights nuclear reactor. Targets in Martin Place, in the business heart of Sydney, were also allegedly considered.

Mr Kaldas said earlier it was unclear whether the men who received the weapons intended to use them for the purposes of terrorism. "The line between the pure criminality and the politically, religiously motivated violence is blurring worldwide and it's the same here," he said. "It's difficult for us to really pin it down to one side of the fence or the other, but we have to keep an open mind."

Mr Kaldas said he believed Mr Abdulrahman was one link in a "chain of supply" but did not know where he fitted in. "We've had a snapshot into a small part of it (the network). There may be others ... but we haven't seen any evidence to suggest it's a massive problem," he said.

Evidence of the existence of the stolen rocket launchers, of which one has been recovered, first came to light during a number of trials involving Sydney underworld figure Adnan Darwiche, who is serving a double life sentence for murder. The Darwiche family was at the centre of a series of shootings in western Sydney in 2002-03 resulting from a feud with the Razzak family.

In 2003, The Australian revealed that police investigating the shootings knew that the gang had access to rocket launchers.

The joint ASIO, AFP and NSW police operation began at dawn yesterday with the arrest of Mr Abdulrahman at his home.

Mr Abdulrahman's neighbour, Kelly Jardine, said at 6.55am an unmarked van heralded the arrival of heavily armed police, who surrounded the house.

Neighbours said police tranquilised a normally placid rottweiler owned by Mr Abdulrahman and, in scenes reminiscent of a police drama, yelled out: "Your house is surrounded, your house is surrounded."

Ms Jardine said Mr Abdulrahman caused a moment of suspense when he emerged from the front door of the home he shares with his wife and two girls with a jacket draped over his arm. She said police yelled at him to drop it, which he did before going willingly with officers.

Ms Jardine said Mr Abdulrahman - who was known on the quiet suburban street for wearing a white baseball cap - did not appear to have a job. She said he had a daughter the same age as her seven-year-old girl, and the two often played together.

Right: Detail of The Lucas Heights Light Water Reactor

The joint operation has been trying to recover seven of the military rockets, which can be used to stop a tank. One of the missing rockets was recovered last year.

Mr Keelty said Mr Abdulrahman had no immediate connections to the ADF and no members of the ADF were said to be under investigation at this point.

The focus of the AFP investigation was now shifting to how the weapon got from the ADF and into the hands of a potential terrorist organisation, the police commissioner said.

"We still haven't satisfied ourselves that there were other missing weapons, and that's the reason why the Department of Defence have announced their audit that's already started (and) that's been joined by ASIO, and we think that's an appropriate step," he said.

The Weekend Australian has been told by defence sources that the rocket launchers could have been taken from a special forces armoury in Sydney.

Sydney is home to the Commando Regiment, part of the ADF's special forces task group.

Mr Abdulrahman faces two charges of dishonestly receiving stolen property, seven counts of unauthorised possession of a prohibited weapon, seven counts of unauthorised supply of a prohibited weapon, and one count of possession of ammunition.

No bail application was made, and bail was formally refused by magistrate Robyn Denes. The court was told that a bail application was likely on January 10.

Labor defence spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon said the episode placed pressure on the federal Government to ensure ADF weapons and equipment were held securely.

Chief of the Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, said the Defence Department was investigating claims that former soldiers might have sold anti-tank rockets on the black market to criminals or even terrorists.

He told reporters in Canberra that the department was conducting an audit of all such weapons in its armories around the country. "We've done a fair bit of work to do a stocktake of our own, and the defence force announced before Christmas that we are imposing extra restrictions on their use to make sure they are used only for operational purposes," he said.

Mr Bagel Humor Olmert makes a new ceasefire!

Mr Bagel wonders how many more rockets???

Bagelblogger has been keeping a count on the amount of rockets being fired by
the Palestinians. You can get a rough idea how many there are by looking at the rocket indicator, which is on the left hand side of the side bar.
It's not updated automatically but it's usually with a few of what the real count is.

There's something tragically wrong with the cease fire Israel has with the Palestinians at the moment. It's in essence a good example of the bias the world shows towards Israel when a civilian death inevitably occurs.

It never ceases to amaze me that 1 out of thousands shells goes astray and kills a civilian and the world goes crazy at Israel.
In context every single rocket that the Palestinians send to Israel is hoped, no Prayed to kill many civilians.

Haveil Havalim 100: 100 Editions later, where are we?

    Welcome one and all to
    Haveil Havalim 100th Edition

Life is a series of decisions, the consequences of those decisions are sometimes apparent, sometimes the consequences of your decisions and actions take you to unexpected places.

Would Saddam have expected to have ended his life swinging from the gallows? You might answer possibly, but I personally doubt it.

This is the 100th edition of Haveil Havalim. As landmarks go it's about as big as they come. In the future the 200th, 1000th edition may come but there will only ever be one 100th edition. It is with this knowledge that I am deeply honored to have the job of hosting the 100th edition of Haveil Havalim, I hope I do justice to Haveil Havalim.

    What is, was, might be:

Haveil Havalim is the carnival of Jewish blogs -- a weekly collection of Jewish & Israeli blog highlights, tidbits and points of interest collected from blogs all around the world. It?s hosted by different bloggers each week and coordinated by Soccer Dad. The term 'Haveil Havalim', which means "Vanity of Vanities", is from Kohelet, Ecclesiastes, which was written by King Solomon. Solomon built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got all bogged down in materialism and other 'excesses' and realized that it was nothing but 'hevel', or in English, 'vanities'.

    Haveil HavalimHistory:

Soccer Dad has a post of the original beginning of how Haveil Havalim got started. For a more through round up of the early begginings of HH check out Ezzies 1st Anniversary post of Haveil Havalim.

    100th Edition Mixing It Up:

As is befitting any work inspired by Soccer Dad, things have been 'mixed up' a little. Posts from about 12 months ago have been included, just to give a sense of place, of comparison and contrast. This 100th edition of Haveil Havalim features both a recent post and a post from a year or so ago. And now without further ado we present this weeks/last years round up.

    Haveil Havalim Kaos:

This Haveil Havalim marks a lot of precedents. For the first time Bagelblogger's email box has more 'real' emails in it than spams. I'd like to apologize to all those kind emailers that have sent me viagra offers, Microsoft office 2007 offers, enlargement of certain mmm.. bodily appendage offers, drug offers, offers to send me $20 plus million because your father was a Sheik in Nigeria, and other assorted un-asked for offers which will not be making Haveil Havalim this week. They will instead be going on an all expenses paid journey to a special place I reserve for seagulls and spam.

To the others who have managed to run the gauntlet of a truckload of spam and the over one hundred email entries to HH100, I hope I didn't miss you!

    Something for Nothing!

To get things going, and to show some good will, I'm passing this message on from Shai Perelman from Groyse Metzie, a Jewish Progressive Klezmer Band. Chanukah:
On Cross-Currents there is a beautiful post My White House Chanukah, it ecapsulates the spirit of Chanukah, its well written and worth the read. Elie from Elie's Expositions writes about Five Little Candle Fires, and lets it slip that the 5th night of Chanukah is also his hebrew birth date, the fifth night of Chanukah theme is further expanded by David from Treppenwitz who explains why the fifth night of Chanukah never falls on Shabbat, 'The Darkest Night'.

One of Bagels favorite bloggers A Simple Jew writes (or is that pictures?) on the very same theme as well. Light On The Darkest Night. Dag presents Chanuka traditions? posted at There are no feminists on a sinking ship. Sarah shares the sixth day of Chanukah with us, _ _ i i I i i i i.

Two JBloggers have become engaged in quite a romantic way. Read about it from Tamara and Tikkunger.

    Judaism:
Daf Notes explores the Kingdom of the Chashmanoim in his post Chashmanoim and Yosef, Daf explores the Halachah on the prohibition of making Images of People in his post The Permissibilty of Photographing People, it seems that Barbie is about to lose her limbs with Daf's final post dealing with baby dolls are to be included in the prohibition of owning statues Rav Elyashiv on Dolls. Apparently a former grand Rabbi is urging parents to amputate their children's dolls to avoid the perils of idolatry.

DAG from There are no feminists on a sinking ship has a 'no Holds barred' discussion on 'He Holds',Yeshivisha lingo: He Holds, in Dag's next post it seems, he opens a can of worms. DAG postulates that while discussing Rabbi Horowitz's topical article about abuse and neglect [Keeping our Children Safe - Part One], Frum families are potentially guilty of neglect due to the Frum world's 'preoccupation' with 'quantity not the quality of our children'.

He puts forward the impractibility of having very large families. From the comments he has recieved, its a very emotive subject. [paraphrasing by BB] Its an important issue in our community and at least DAG is brave enough to raise the issue. One Point people are missing in the Rabbi Horowitz article

A Simple Jew continues his discussion about nothing, well actually about a 'little Nothing', something that took newcomer BB quite a while to work out. [BB: Nittel Nacht]

Sheyna from Books and Beliefs writes about davening and being Interconnected, she candidly talks about the good and the bad times in her spiritual quest.

    Israel:

Yisrael from My Right Word posts about the Attorney Generals threat to MK Efi Eitam [NU], the AG threatens Repeating anti-Arab comments may lead to charges, Yisrael thinks its a bit over the top, I wonder if it was an Arab MK would the AG be so quick to threaten legal action?

Elder of Zion writes about the 'Attack on Rachel's Tomb' Just terror as usual.., (at least some one is writing about it! ). He points out some very poignant facts about the role of the media in demonizing Israel. Another Must read. On the positive front Muse from Me-ander was lucky enough to meet and greet the latest olim chadashim, new immigrants to Israel, see her post This is where I was today also check out Facing the Future Here in Israel!WestBankMama from WestBankBlog writes about The More Things Change...., an eerie post that has to be one of the highlights of the this Haveil Havalim. You owe it to yourself to read it.Treppenwitz screams enough is enough, he puts forward the The Dresden Option. [thanks to CiJ for the HT]. Speaking of Carl in Jerusalem his post Shoot us, please shoot us! does raise some serious questions about the prudence of giving your enemy the very guns they will use to kill you. If thats not enough Carl takes issue with an IDF ethicist who proclaims "The government's policy of restraint regarding Kassam rocket launchings from Gaza is legitimate from an ethical perspective". On 'ethicists' and Jewish values.

We've all seen and read the reports of the cutting down of olive trees, and the truth has recently come out, well welcome to another case of deception and theft. Yisrael from My Right Word reports that Local Arab neighbours are illegally entering into private lamd and slaughtering the owners cows. What's of special interests is the neighbours are managing to get Four donkeys across the seperation barrier! read about it here, A News Item Unreported: Slaughter of the Cows.FinallyA Mother in Israel writes about The Unofficial Guide to Israeli Vermin, and no its not another political rant, seems Israel has its fair share of creepy crawlies.

    Israel's Neighbours:

Yid with a lid thinks he noses what Abbas is all about: His Nose keeps Growing

Carl in Jerusalem makes us all feel even more nervous with his observations on The Iranian nuclear threat is madder than MAD

Linda from Everyone needs therapy? Lessons from a family therapist writting on an altogether different subject has brought to my attention something that is quite thematically related. Getting Good Grades, Plagiarism and Copyright.

I suspect DovWeasel has used similar software as what Linda talks about. Actually it would have been nice for DovWeasel to have shared this resource, especially if they wanted to avoid the impression that they had uncovered DovBear's 'crimes against humanity' with out such a resource, i.e. it was with just plain hard, time consuming research.

Liza R from Somethingsomething attended a Pro Israel blogging conference called
"The Media as a Theater of War, the Blogosphere,

Rick Richman from Jewish Current Issues posts about Abba Eban's opening statements at the 1983 Geneva Peace Conference. What Abba Eban had to say then is just as relevant today as it was then. Two of the major points were: The lack of support the Palestinians recieved from other Arab countries; and the need for Israel to have Defensible borders. Its quite uncanny to read how relevant it is still today. Abba Eban's Road Map.
