Man Arrested for Blowing Shofar at Western Wall

Police have stopped a prayer leader from blowing the Shofar at the Kotel
[Arutz Sheva]
Shades of the 1920's: A Jewish man was hauled off to the Old City police station in the middle of prayer for sounding the shofar during Rosh HaShanah services at the area known as the Kotel HaKatan.
[Click Mr Bagel to read More ]

The incident occurred around 7:30 in the morning, at the northern-most section of the accessible Western Wall - a little-known area called the Kotel HaKatan, the Small Wall. It is considered to have extra sanctity, as it stands opposite the presumed spot of the Holy of Holies of the Beit HaMikdash.

Yesterday morning (Sunday), a group of some 10 men and two women gathered at the site, as they have done for several years on Rosh HaShanah, for early-morning prayers. The holiday prayers feature the blowing of the shofar (ram's horn) at several different times.

Towards the end of the first shofar sounding, a Border Guard policeman came in, made an unclear motion with his hand as if to ask what was going on, and then left. He said nothing.

Shortly afterwards, Eliyahu K., the 20-year-old prayer leader, blew the shofar a second time, in the midst of his silent prayer (in accordance with Sephardic custom).

Policemen came in once again and began trying to pull him away. However, Eliyahu was in the midst of reciting the Amidah - a long passage during which one must stand in one place without moving - and he therefore did not move.

The policemen informed their supervisors by radio that he was praying and refused to move, and reinforcements were soon sent - no fewer than 20 policemen, according to several witnesses.

They then started dragging him out, and when they stopped for a moment, he got up and resumed his prayers. They then began to drag him away again, and shortly afterwards again stopped for a moment - and again he resumed his prayers. At this point, the policemen allowed him to complete his prayers.

In the meanwhile, the other members of the prayer group came out and tried to prevent the policemen from taking Eliyahu away. At this point, the policemen started swinging their clubs violently; no one was hospitalized, but "it was a big brawl," in the words of one witness, with many people being dragged around and beaten while wearing their prayer-shawls and Sabbath suits.

Meanwhile, Eliyahu was taken to the small police station at the Western Wall plaza, and several of his friends followed him there. They wanted to go up the steps into the police station, and demanded that at least the shofar be returned, but the police again came down with their clubs.

They finally took Eliyahu by foot, accompanied by his fiancיe, all the way around the Old City, past Mt. Zion and through Jaffa Gate, to the Kishle police station inside Jaffa Gate. At this point, there was no longer any violence, and Eliyahu was released around 11:30 - after being charged with attacking a policeman, disturbing a policeman in the line of duty, and disturbing the public order.

One witness related, "It's not only that they stopped him from blowing the shofar, but rather the fact that the police beat us up very harshly. I was on my way to the Wall for prayers when I saw 5-7 policemen going with Eliyahu and protecting him very closely. I walked after them, and then a few of his friends came, and then the violence started. We asked the policemen to return the shofar, and they started kicking us and punching us."

"The worshipers said that the police had apparently been called by an Arab woman who said the sound of the ram's horn disturbed her children. "

A Jewish resident of the Old City told Arutz-7, "How ironic. The loud Arab weddings and nightly prayers by the muazzin [over a powerful loudspeaker] at 4:30 AM disturb our sleep every night." Similar complaints are heard from Jews living near Arab villages in Judea and Samaria.

A member of the Jerusalem Police spokesman's office, contacted by Arutz-7 for a statement on the matter and asked whether this signified a new policy towards shofar-blowing at the Wall, said, "When we have an answer for you, I will get back to you."

The head of the local council of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City, Shmuel Yitzchaki, could not be reached for comment by the time of this report.

The rabbi of the Western Wall, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, told Arutz-7, "This is a very grave incident, and I have asked the local police commander, Yossi Priente, to check into it - both the violence and the prevention of the shofar blowing. It reminds us of the days of the British Mandate when Jews [had to make] super-human efforts to blow the shofar at the Western Wall."

He was referring to the 1ate 1920's, when the British, in an attempt to appease the Arabs, and following violence at the Wall, forbade shofar-blowing at the Wall. In one famous incident in 1929, a man named Moshe Segal blew the shofar at the conclusion of Yom Kippur - and was immediately arrested by the British.

Though he had fasted for the previous 25 hours, the British detained him without food until midnight, when he was released. It was later reported that the release came about when then-Chief Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook informed the commander that he himself would not eat until Segal was released.

Nearly 40 years later, following the first Yom Kippur service at the Wall under Israeli sovereignty, shortly after the Six Day War, the shofar was again sounded - by Moshe Segal.
The Jerusalem police department can be faxed at (972-2) 539-1190.

BB: If you can, let the Jerusalem Police know this isn't acceptable.

It seems that since the 1967 war Israel has accede more and more control of the Temple Mount. When is this appeasement going to stop? Appeasement leads to more and more demands, have we not learnt this yet?

Rabbi Shlomo Goren blowing a Shofar (ram's horn) and holding a Torah scroll at the liberation of the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem, 1967. The Western Wall was recaptured by the Israeli Paratroop Brigade during the Six Day War, and Rabbi Goren was on hand to blow the shofar while holding a Torah scroll in his left arm.

RAfi G on LifeinIsrael has written a post that provides insight into why the Shofar is not blown on the first day of Rosh Hashana when it fall on Shabbos. [And why some advocate it should be]Check it out here.

Did you blow the shofar on the 1st day?

Pope cartoon is highly offensive Pope is Nazi, arrogant, stupid and criminal

Don't dare draw a cartoon of the prophet Mohammed but drawing a cartoon of the head of the Catholic Church depicted as a Nazi is acceptable?

Hamas: Pope is Nazi,
arrogant, stupid and criminal;
Allah will punish Pope in due time

"The Pope and those who live under his cloak"
[Al-Risala, September 18, 2006]

A current issue of the official Hamas weekly "Al Risala" features Pope Benedict holding a Swastika while wearing a scarf of US and Danish flags. Meanwhile, on Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority TV, a Hamas religious leader called the Pope "criminal and arrogant," "ignorant and stupid," and then warned the Pope to await his punishment. Allah doesn't necessarily punish the wicked immediately, but waits "until a day when eyes will stare (in terror)."

From the Friday sermon by Hamas religious leader, Dr. Osama Al-Mazini:

"The second message is for the criminal Benedict the 16th, the Vatican Pope. For this ignorant and stupid Pope, who has no one to attack besides Islam and the Prophet [Muhammad], may the Creator have mercy on him and protect him. He [the Pope] characterized Islam as a cruel religion, and characterized Muhammad, may the Creator have mercy on him and protect him, as a cruel man, spilling blood, who strove to kill. This hostile Pope refuses to apologize to Muslims; and, instead of apologizing he blames the Muslims for not understanding, thereby adding crime upon crime. This arrogant Pope sees the Muslims as too inferior that he should apologize to them. To this arrogant Pope - criminal and arrogant - this message is from Allah the Elevated and the Exalted, as it was said: 'Think not that Allah is unaware of what the wicked do. He but gives them a respite until a day when eyes will stare (in terror).' [Sura14:42]" [Palestinian Authority TV, September 22, 2006]

Tajikistan's only Synagogue Is attacked again.

Once again the world is silent as Jews are persecuted and hounded into leaving another country. Over 2,ooo years of Cultural history don't seem to count for much nowadays.

Where is the World outrage??

[Click Mr Bagel to read this important story]

A Map Showing the Location of Dushanbe in Central Asia

From the Jerusalem Post

For the second time in a month, vandals this past week attacked the last remaining synagogue in the city of Dushanbe, capital of the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, in what is believed to have been an attempt to set the building on fire.

"Last Wednesday, two youths approached the synagogue and hurled a Molotov cocktail into the courtyard, which burst into flames," David Gourevich, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement's chief rabbi of Central Asia, told The Jerusalem Post by phone from neighboring Uzbekistan, where he is based.

"Two elderly Jews who were inside at the time saw the youths and began to chase them, but they managed to get away," he said, adding that local police were called but failed to intervene.

The incident marked the second time in the past month that the synagogue has come under attack, the rabbi said.

On August 18, unidentified assailants started a fire in the building and fled the scene. The flames damaged some curtains before being extinguished. The perpetrators were never caught.

"The authorities are refusing to provide protection for the site, and say that it is the Jewish community's responsibility to pay for security," Gourevich said. "But the community does not have any money to pay for guards or security on its own."

The Dushanbe synagogue garnered international attention earlier this year, when Tajik authorities announced plans to raze it in order to make way for the expansion of a presidential palace.

The Synagogue has already been partly demolished,

the destruction ceased after Protests

In February, demolition teams began tearing down the century-old synagogue, but halted in the wake of an international outcry, though not before they had managed to destroy the community's mikve, an office and a classroom.

The US government, various Jewish organizations, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had all pressed Tajikistan not to knock down the country's sole Jewish house of worship.

But the fate of the synagogue continues to remain uncertain. According to Gourevich, there has been no change on the ground in the intervening six months.

"When I visited Dushanbe a few months ago, I met with the city's chief architect as well as with other officials," he said. "They told me they were going to draw up plans for an alternative site for a synagogue in the city, but as far as I know, this has not yet happened.

"Nonetheless, I told the authorities it would be better if the synagogue were left in place," the rabbi said. "If world Jewry showed more of an interest, it wouldn't be touched."

It is unclear if the two attacks on the synagogue in the past month are connected with the controversy over the government's desire to demolish the building.

Gourevich noted that services continue to be held at the synagogue on the three days a week - Mondays, Thursdays and Shabbat - when the Torah is read.

He also noted that he recently received official permission from the Tajik government to open a Chabad-Lubavitch office in Dushanbe, and that he is now looking for a full-time emissary, and financial support, to staff it.

Some 350 Jews, most of whom are elderly, still reside in Dushanbe. "Virtually no young people remain, and most members of the community are either ill or destitute," said Gourevich, who sends a shohet to the city once a week to provide kosher meat for them. "They too are Jews, and we have to help them," he said
Gourevich added that he hopes to visit the community before Rosh Hashana to assess the current situation.

Don't allow the world to be fooled by this. This isn't just ' a long steady escalation of anti semitism' it appears even more sinister.
The Tajikistan authorites have been trying to destroy the few remaining elements of Jewish Infrastructure.
Is it a co-incidence that 'youths' are trying to burn the last remaining Synagogue, I fear there may be more behind this than meets the eye. This the same Synagogue that the Tajikistan Authorites wanted to pull down for palace extensions! This is the Synagogue which just happens to be where a Presidential Palace is being planned/built.

Intimidation and Oppression.
The Authorities have tried to bully the Dushanbe Jews many times. They had commenced destroying the Synagogue once before, until its destruction was holted.

In an atmosphere of Oppresion and Hatred, the Dushabe Jews are intimidated.

The last time the Synagogue was being pulled down a local citizen reported that when a Jewish member of the synagogue filmed the destruction, officials threatened to break his video-camera.

Reports have circulated that members of the community indicate that they have been threatened by government officials for raising their voices.

What were the poor Jews of Dushanbe,Tajikistan offered?

A peice of land in an undeveloped part of Dushanbe and no assistance with rebuilding.
Oh and the option to pay rent on a facility 200 metres away from the block of land.
Rip down the Synagogue. Steal the Land the Synagogue has been on for over a 100 years.
Pay no compensation. Offer a remoter piece of land in an undeveloped area of the city.
Pay rent for facilities you once owned, but now would be forced to pay rent for!

The latest fire bombing has brought the official response:
Security is the concern of the Jewish community.
It is their responsibility to pay for security.

A State sponsored plan of forced exodus?

Where is the world outrage here?

Welcome to Thought - Less Design 101

In the heady days of the dot com era, every man and his dog was rushing to get on the gigantic money making machine that was going to be the Web. A few Aspros and a lot less cash later, reality came crashing back to earth.

Some of those in their rush to register their 'must have' names should have taken just a wee bit longer, it seems.. [Adults only: No rude pictures]

I've registered a few domain names in my time, hopefully none that approach these ones in 'multi functionality'.

When it comes to building websites, sometimes Clients get so enthusiastic that well...

Sometimes a website name sounds good at the time, but after its registered, the business is up and running, another way of saying it proves to be quite embarrassing, often hilarious.

Some businesses may have been running for years and decide to get a web site. A fairly innocuous name suddenly, when stringed together as on the web gets an entire different meaning.

Usually these err.. misnomers are picked up and the odd hyphen or extra word in between changes things, sometimes they're not picked up and we're left.. laughing.

The common example that appears on the Internet is a website called Experts Exchange, where techies(Guys who prefer computers to Girlfriends) gather to answer each others questions.

The founder of the site was using what seemed like the very nice domain name of ExpertsExchange.com, and it became very popular. But, early on, he found out that some were reading the the domain name differently, mispronouncing it as ExpertSexChange.com. LOL!

The website has since changed its name to Experts-Exchange.com . Now people are less likely to think its a rather specialist website for experts wanting gender reassignment.

Everyone now understands he is not in the business of performing sex change operations for experts(??)

Other classic mispronounced domain names.

One is the site WhoRepresents.com, with the unfortunate alternate enunciation of WhorePresents.com. What ever you do, I strongly recommend you don?t buy the present on your credit card! (If your into that kind of thing.)

Another is TherapistFinder.com, for those looking for California marriage and family therapists. Unfortunately, the wrong clientele might stumble upon the site as TheRapistFinder.com.

And then there is PenIsland.net, where you can buy custom pens. However, someone could mistake their site name for something else if they pronounce it PenisLand.net.

Adding to the hilarity - it seems the site owner has written some of his product descriptions with this misnomer and ambiguity in mind:

"Whether you're looking for a long and skinny pen, a thick pen, a fountain pen that squirts ink, or even a black pen, we have just the one for you."

Mmmm seems they've got one for every body.

And if the first website name ExpertsExchange.com was one you were hoping was still working, and your looking for ..ahem Gender reassignment then I'm pretty sure, even if you were an expert looking for a sex change these guys will accept your dollar.

You can head over to DollarSexChange.com. Oh sorry, that was DollarsExchange.com.

Another blogger used Whois.sc's Domain Explorer function to find all registered names that ended in "sexechange.com". There were dozens that were obviously meant to have meanings other sex change. But, the owners must have figured out the problems with them because about all are not in use. These are names like:

  • Comics Exchange.com (ComicSexChange.com)
  • VeteransExchange.com (VeteranSexChange.com)
  • MusiciansExchange.com (MusicianSexChange.com)
  • ActorsExchange.com (ActorSexChange.com)
  • ExoticsExchange.com (ExoticSexChange.com)
  • GraphicsExchange.com (GraphicSexChange.com)
  • HomesExchange.com (HomeSexChange.com)
  • KidsExchange.com (KidSexChange.com)
  • MomsExchange.com (MomSexChange.com)
  • PlayersExchange (PlayerSexChange.com)
  • WomensExchange.com (WomenSexChange.com)
  • StudentsExchange.com (StudentSexChange.com)
    .....and last but not least
  • Plastics Exchange http://www.plasticsexchange.com/
In their FAQ, last question: - Do you know that, if separated, your name spells
"The Plastic Sex Change"? Answer: "Yup" That's respect.

Some other active sites with interesting names:

Here's a list of some funny URLs, where the designer didn't thinking about how people would read the name of the site:
1) Who Represents?, a database for agencies to the rich and famous:

2) Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange
advice and views:

3) Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island:
http://www.penisland.net or maybe www.penisland.org

4) Need a therapist?

5) Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales:

6) Gas central heating anyone?

7) New to Milan and you need electric light? Why not sign up on-line with

8) Ever wanted to visit beautiful Lake Tahoe ?
It seems they offer more than wildlife experiences

9) Seems awfully cruel , I thought your first hair cut as a child was traumatic..

10) If you're sick of stalking Movie stars there's always models..

11. This one must be for voyeurs??

12) Those Stock brookers party hard on the week ends..

13) I've never really been into pain but hey...

ChooseSpain.com is also ChoosesPain.com

14) And last but not least, seems I'm even catered for if I decide on Gender reassignment..

GraphicArtsExchange.com is also GraphicArtSexChange.com

It would be near impossible to thank all the blogs, websites that have collected names on this list. Even if I thanked a certain website the chances are, they got this name or that name from another blog/website. In the spirit of sharing a laugh, thank you to those that contributed, and those that want to use this post. just don't use my hosting. If you want to use my picture at the top say thank you on your blog.
