4 Killed When Israeli Bomb Hits U.N. Post
Fighting an Enemy that breaks all the Rules
BEIRUT, Lebanon Jul 25, 2006 (AP) : A U.N. observer post was hit by an Israeli airstrike in south Lebanon Tuesday, killing four peacekeepers, U.N. officials said.
A bomb directly hit the building and shelter of an Indian patrol base from the observer force in the town of Khiyam near the eastern end of the border with Israel, said Milos Struger, spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL.
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said in New York that the Security Council was informed that four officers with UNIFIL were killed, but he had no other information.
"We're obviously very sorry," Boltin said. "We're attempting to get information where we can to confirm the nature of the incident."
Struger also said there were 14 other incidents of firing close to this position from the Israeli side Tuesday afternoon. "The firing continued even during the rescue operation," he said.
Since Israel launched a massive military offensive against Lebanon and Hezbollah guerrillas July 12, an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in the southern port city of Tyre.
Five UNIFIL soldiers and one military observer have also been wounded, Struger said.

Bagel Blogger commentary:
This latest accident is a timely reminder of how horrific war can be. People die. People get terribly injured. On both sides.
While the media has been quick to claim who was responsible, they have been very slow to point the finger the other way, when it comes to Hizbollah and some of its latest actions.
Hizbollah, breaching international law
The very fact Hizbollah are advising their fighters not to engage directly with Israeli forces now, suggests strongly that they are hiding amongst the civilian population. The Geneva convention prohibits the targeting of civilians, it also has quite a bit to say about the appropiate dress of combatants.
Where exactly are these combatants going?, when they stop 'directly engaging',..[stop directly engaging], doublespeak for hiding amongst civilians and then using this as a means to attack Israel.
Where's the International outrage?
Being held to account
If Israel is being held to account for civilian casualties, why isn't Hisbollah being held to account for its direct breaches of International Law with regards to the Geneva convention?? These very breaches which directly cause civilians to become embroiled in the conflict.
When is Hizbollah going to be held accountable, when is the World and the U.N. going to hold Hizbollah accountable?
Where Civilians were Militants yesterday,
and Militants are Civilians today.
As the war intensifies, Hizbollah hides more and more within the civilian population. We have all seen the photos of civilian men, elderly men, women celebrating, firing guns into the air when the Israeli soldiers were killed and kidnapped, don't think for a second, despite the lack of uniform that some of these 'innocent' civilians wouldn't try shoting the odd Israeli soldier if given half the chance.
Quoting from the ABC article we read:
"Since Israel launched a massive military offensive against Lebanon and Hezbollah guerrillas July 12, an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in the southern port city of Tyre. Five UNIFIL soldiers and one military observer have also been wounded, Struger said."
The heat of Battle
In the heat of battle, with Kaos all around, who has most to gain, if UNIFIL soldiers are hit and killed?
Certainly not Israel; "an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in the southern port city of Tyre."
Why is it that is was: "crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas" why isn't it between Hezbollah guerrillas and Israeli forces ?
So reading that punch line again:
"an international civilian employee working with UNIFIL and his wife have been killed in the crossfire between Hezbollah guerrillas and Israeli forces in the southern port city of Tyre."
Sounds a bit different?
Room Service please...
But then with bombs falling all around you, watching the reports back in your hotel room, its hard to be accurate, writing, and it sounds so much better when Israel is at fault.
Hizbollah, Desperate Actions..?
Despite the Rhetoric, right now Hizbollah would do anything to have Israel's attack halted. This would include doing something that would outrage the world, as long as initially it appeared it was Israels fault, and that Hizbollah were the innocent party.
Quickest way to end this war ?
The quickest way for this war to come to an end, [apart from just releasing the hostages,,..?!!] is to have 'innocents' bombed, especially third party innocents like 'reporters or U.N. officials or even better 'other nationalities' trying to escape.
In the Country where turning your
car ignition key can be your last action...
But Hizbollah don't have the ability to drop this type of bomb. Who said anything about dropping a bomb, whats wrong with wiring one up? Are you worried about the evidence remaining?
Bombs falling from the Ground
If that 'terrible accident' happens, and all the other bombs were 250 metres away , don't look just up at the sky, look around at ground level as well.
