US students sue over Borat film

Sacha Baron Cohen's character has been a hit in US cinemas

Two US students are suing a film studio claiming they were duped into appearing in spoof movie Borat starring Sacha Baron Cohen as a Kazakh journalist.

The unknown plaintiffs are seen making sexist and racist remarks in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Legal papers said the two men "engaged in behaviour that they otherwise would not have engaged in".

Spokesman for 20th Century Fox Gregg Brilliant said the case "has no merit".

The men are identified in the film as two fraternity members from a South Carolina university.

'Humiliation'

They are not named in the case "to protect themselves from any additional and unnecessary embarrassment".

According to legal documents, a production crew took the pair to a bar to drink and "loosen up" before taking part in a documentary they were told would be shown outside the US.

The film "made plaintiffs the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community," the papers stated.

British comedian Cohen appears in the film as an apparently naive reporter whose enthusiastic offensiveness either leaves his US interviewees in shock, or persuades them to reveal a little too much of their own prejudices.

As well as Fox, the two men are also suing three other production companies.

The film is currently at the top of the box office charts in North America and the UK.

I laughed at Borat: Kazakh diplomat

Erlan Idrissov, the Kazakh ambassador to Britain, has admitted he laughed at many of the jokes in a film about Borat, the fictional reporter from Kazakhstan doing a tour of the United States.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan has caused a stormy reaction from the Kazakh government - it has threatened legal action, and last month published a four-page supplement in The New York Times extolling the country's attractions.

"I sincerely laughed at many of the jokes, but at the same time couldn't get rid of a feeling of being a bit insulted," Idrissov told The Times newspaper, after it hosted a private screening of the film for him.

The newspaper said Idrissov laughed when Borat - British comic Sacha Baron Cohen - was depicted pursuing a live chicken through the carriage of a New York subway train, and again when a US government official agreed to eat cheese at the beginning of an interview, told it was a "Kazakh tradition", only to be told later that it was made from human breast milk.

The ambassador did not, however, laugh when the film suggested Kazakhs have a Spanish-style festival called "the running of the Jew", in which citizens flee while being chased by people wearing caricature masks, The Times said.

Baron Cohen, himself a Jew, also takes swipes at feminists, gays, blacks and US President George W Bush's "war of terror" in the film.

BB: Good to see the diplomat has a sense of humor. Maybe Kazakhs were the target because of their tolerance??

Borat gets invited 'Home'.

A top Kazakh official has an invitation for the British comedian whose depiction of a homophobic, misogynistic, English-mangling Kazakh journalist has outraged the Central Asian nation: come visit.

The Deputy Foreign Minister, Rakhat Aliyev, said in an interview published today that he understands why Kazakhs are unhappy about Sacha Baron Cohen's character, Borat.

"But we must have a sense of humour and respect other people's freedom of creativity," Mr Aliyev was quoted as saying by Kazakhstan Today.

"I'd like to invite Cohen here," he said. "He can discover a lot of things. Women drive cars, wine is made of grapes and Jews are free to go to synagogues."

Though to some Cohen's antics are potentially more insulting to Americans, Kazakhs have long seethed at his popularity and his maligning of their country. Cohen's Borat character has presented inhabitants of the ex-Soviet republic as addicted to horse urine, fond of shooting dogs, and viewing rape and incest as respectable hobbies.

Kazakh officials have tried to respond to the outrageous descriptions.

The Foreign Ministry recently ran ads on CNN, in The New York Times, and the International Herald Tribune citing laudable - though slightly boring - facts and figures on the nation's economic growth, civil liberties and cultural achievements.

Kazakh officials are also wincing at the imminent US premiere of Cohen's full-length feature movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

"It's useless to offend an artist and threaten to sue him," Mr Aliyev was quoted as saying. "It will only further damage the country's reputation and make Borat even more popular."

Kazakistan Prints Money with Spelling Mistake

Not only that but who is this nobody head,
why not use my good head?

The Kazakhstan central bank has misspelled the word "bank" on its new notes.

The bank plans to put the misprinted notes - worth 2000 tenge ($20) and 5000 tenge ($50) - into circulation in November and then gradually withdraw them to correct the spelling.

The move has drawn the ire of the Central Asian state's politicians who urged the bank to abandon the notes altogether.

"The mistake ... is not just a spelling problem - it has political undertones," a letter from members of parliament to President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

"We urge you to tell the National Bank not to put out the notes with a mistake in the Kazakh language."

BB: Rumor has it that apparently Borat is claiming that they have also put the wrong head on the notes.
