Francis Bacon was known to have done a substantial number of Pope paintings. This famous painting was influenced by Velazquez's famous Portrait of Pope Innocent X.
Bacon also did some 'portraits' of Pius in the following year.
Including Imaginary Portrait of Pope Pius XII
Is it simply a coincidence that the background of Bacon's 'Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X' has so many dark spot similarities to the famous photo of concentration camp bunks?
Especially look at the uncanny 'figure ' like apparition on the right hand foreground, which matches this photograph.
