The blast killed Abu Risha, his aide and two of his bodyguards, the source said.
Earlier, the source said that Abu Risha was killed as a suicide bomber slammed his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint guarding Abu Risha's house.
As the head of the Anbar Awakened Council, an alliance of Sunni tribes in Iraq's western province of Anbar province, Abu Risha had converted to a helpful force fighting al-Qaida in Iraq.
Last week, Abu Risha attended meeting with President George W. Bush and Iraqi officials in the Anbar province during the Bush surprise visit to a U.S. military base in Iraq's western province of Anbar.

Mr Bagel: Just when things are starting to turn around in Iraq, lead by a turn around which has happened in the Anbar province, Al-Qaida strikes at the epicenter of the positive change.
The western world needs to recognise al-Qaida doesn't play within the normal boundaries, it is a ruthless organisation which will resort to any measure to achieve its objectives.
In a time of an urgent need for unity both within Iraq and at a home in the United States, al-Qaida is deliberately targeting divisions within Iraq , weakening the resolve of the US public to see this through.
If al-Qaida achieves its aims, Iraq will become a hot bed for world terrorism.
